Thanks for the considered reponse, Clark, and good to hear from you.

The Styleguide blog is a useful corollary or complement to the book – catered to my hunger for the context and evidence I experienced while reading.

Didn’t intend to imply that VL is naive, but the picture painted in the book seemed to imply an embedded moral compass indicating that merit prevailed (which may not be the case in use, as you’ve identified). Am curious as to how it has been received by other cultures, and whether adaptations were required. Anyway, keen to get a close look at the sim.

Wrote the review while aiding and abetting the design of sims for teaching maintenance of marine combat, navigational and propulsion systems. Defining the required levels of fidelity was a challenge, and generated a lot of interesting arguments with systems engineers.

Agree that the book and approach should not be dismissed due to high cost - as you've identified elsewhere, the cost is only an impediment if the required sim aspires to Virtual Leader's features. We've been doing inexpensive branching stories, frame games, etc for sometime, with success.

Regards from this side of the Pacific,

Thank you so much for the honor of reviewing my book. If I may, here are some comments.

First, while I agree it is a case study, I don't think it is too speculative, nor do I even think it is product promotion. It is not speculative in that these activities are all real. I tried very hard not to make it product promotion, in that I did not even include some of the results of Virtual Leader, for just that reason. Ironically, to be less speculative, to show the real results of the sim, for example, would be more product promotion. Having said that, here is a link to some real case studies, just to show you that they do exist!

http://clarkaldrich.blogspot.com/search/label/Simulation%20Case%20Studies%20and%20Anecdotes

My advocacy was not intended to be of the product (I even called it a "concept car" on the book jacket), but of the process. My goal was to write a book that how one has to think differently about simulation than linear content. Given that it was about the thinking of a sim, not the programming of the sim, I agree I made the trade-off to make it less immediately useful to a programmer, but hopefully more useful to designers and sponsors for the years to come.

I don't believe Virtual Leader is naive. People can force their wills instead of listen, and build alliances by supporting things that they would not otherwise. The greater criticism of it is that it teaches you to be manipulative. That may be true, and it may be inevitable.

I think you last comment, about the cost, is relevant, but hopefully not a reason to dismiss the book and approach. We went deep, to be sure, but many designers have been successful with a more shallow "mini-game" approach. Here are some web based examples:

http://clarkaldrich.blogspot.com/search/label/Examples

But yes, the training communities default expectation of completely customized content may be challenged in the years to come.

I agree one should be suspicious of any simulation designer hawking their goods. But one should also be suspicious of any author or researcher who does not have coal under their fingernails.

I have written another book, Learning By Doing, since SATFOL to explore the broad genres of educational simulations that many have found to be a bit more practical, and ultimately SATFOL fits as a case study within that book. And my blog, http://clarkaldrich.blogspot.com/ tries to look at the syntax of simulations, which may be as specific as the syntax of writing.

This will be a long journey, with few short quick fixes, but ultimately transformational. That my book can get such a thoughtful reaction from you, positive or negative, and evolve the conversation means that we all win.
